Terms of Use
Effective date · July 1, 2026
The short version. Axon is a personal tool its creator built for themselves and shares as free, open-source software under the MIT License. If you use it, you use it as-is, at your own risk, for yourself, and you agree it is not medical advice. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the app.
1. Agreement and how you accept it
These Terms of Use, together with the Disclaimer and the Privacy notice (collectively, the “Terms”), govern your use of the Axon software and any page of this site. Before the app opens your workspace it presents these documents and asks you to confirm agreement by ticking an unchecked box and selecting “I agree” — an affirmative act you must take yourself. By doing so, or by otherwise using the app, you confirm that you have had the opportunity to read the Terms and that you accept them. If you do not agree, your only remedy is to not use the software.
Because Axon has no server and no accounts, your acceptance — including the version of the Terms you accepted and the time you accepted it — is recorded only in your own browser’s local storage. That record is the evidence of your agreement on that device. If the Terms change materially, the version number changes and the app asks for your agreement again before opening your workspace.
2. What Axon is — and is not
Axon is a personal, local-first notebook for cognitive self-tracking and data organization that its creator built for their own use and released, without charge, as open-source software. It is not a product, a service, a medical device, a diagnostic or screening tool, or a source of medical, psychological, pharmacological, legal, or other professional advice. Nothing in the software — including the compound reference library, psychometric instruments, scores, summaries, or genetic notes — is a recommendation to take, change, combine, or stop any substance or treatment. Always consult a qualified, licensed professional before acting on anything the software surfaces. See the Disclaimer for the full statement.
3. Open-source license (MIT)
The software, including its source code, documentation, and static app files, is licensed under the MIT License. The license text ships with the source code in the LICENSE file and provides, among other things, that the software is provided “AS IS”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, and that in no event shall the authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages, or other liability arising from the software or its use. Those license terms are incorporated into these Terms. Nothing in these Terms limits the rights the MIT License grants you in the code; these Terms add conditions only on your use of the running app.
4. Intellectual property and trademarks
The MIT License covers the software’s code and associated files. It does not grant any right to use the “Axon” name, logo, or visual identity in a way that suggests your fork, deployment, or product is made, endorsed, or operated by the Axon Project. Third-party materials referenced by the app — published psychometric instruments, research papers, and external test platforms — remain the property of their respective owners and are cited or linked under their own terms. Your own entries are yours; the project claims no rights in your data.
5. Your responsibilities
- Use it for yourself. Axon is designed for personal, individual use by an adult on their own device. You are responsible for every entry you make and every decision you take.
- You must be 18 or older (or the age of majority where you live) to use the app.
- Your data is yours to protect. All app data lives in your browser. Backups, exports, encryption passphrases, and anything you paste into third-party AI tools or other services are your responsibility.
- Follow your local law. The reference library describes compounds whose legal status varies by jurisdiction; a listing is not a statement that anything is legal, safe, or appropriate for you.
- Do not rely on it in an emergency. If you are in crisis or experiencing a medical emergency, contact local emergency services or a qualified professional immediately.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the software for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law;
- use the software to provide, or present its outputs as, medical or psychological diagnosis, screening, treatment, or professional advice to any other person;
- enter, process, or track another person’s health, genetic, or personal data in the app without a lawful basis and their informed consent;
- misrepresent the origin of the software, remove or alter its copyright and license notices except as the MIT License permits, or imply endorsement by the Axon Project;
- attempt to interfere with, or circumvent, the app’s consent gate, safety framing, or disclaimers when providing the app to others.
7. No professional relationship
Using the software does not create any physician–patient, therapist–client, pharmacist–customer, fiduciary, or other professional relationship between you and the creator, contributors, or the Axon Project. No communication through the project’s repository, issue tracker, or documentation constitutes professional advice.
8. No warranty; assumption of risk
The software is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, statutory, or otherwise, including any warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, reliability, availability, or non-infringement. Scores and summaries are statistical descriptions of the data you enter and may contain errors. You assume all risk arising from your use of, or reliance on, the software and its outputs, including any decision about your health, any substance, or any activity you undertake or refrain from undertaking.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the creator, contributors, and copyright holders of Axon shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, health outcome, or other loss or damage of any kind, arising out of or in connection with the software or these Terms — whether in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability, or otherwise — even if advised of the possibility of such damage. Where liability cannot be excluded, the aggregate liability of the creator, contributors, and copyright holders is limited to the amount you paid for the software, which is zero. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you; in that case liability is limited to the minimum extent required by law. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, such as liability for fraud.
10. Indemnification
If you use the software in breach of these Terms — including providing it, or its outputs, to others as advice or as a service — you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the creator, contributors, and copyright holders of Axon from and against any claims, damages, losses, and reasonable expenses (including legal fees) brought by third parties arising out of that breach or your violation of applicable law.
11. Third-party links and services
The app links to independent third parties — external cognitive-test platforms, published research, and any AI service you choose to hand an analysis bundle to. Those are not operated, reviewed, vetted, or endorsed by the Axon Project, and your use of them is governed by their own terms and privacy policies. The Axon Project is not responsible for their content, availability, accuracy, or data practices.
12. Forks, modifications, and hosted deployments
The MIT License lets you copy, modify, and redeploy the software. If you do — especially if you add accounts, collect other people’s data, or operate it as a hosted service — you are solely responsible for your deployment, including its legal compliance, privacy terms, security, and accessibility. These Terms describe only the unmodified app as shared by the Axon Project, and you may not present your modified deployment as governed by, or endorsed under, these Terms.
13. Termination
Your permission to use the running app ends automatically if you materially breach these Terms. You may end this agreement at any time by ceasing to use the app and deleting your local data (Settings → Privacy & data). Termination does not affect the rights the MIT License grants you in the source code, and the sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive — including sections 4 and 7 through 11 — survive termination.
14. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute that cannot be resolved informally shall be brought in the courts of Ontario, Canada. If the mandatory consumer-protection law of your place of residence gives you rights or a forum that cannot be waived, nothing in this section takes them away.
15. Changes to these Terms
If the Terms change materially, the effective date above changes and the app will ask for your agreement again before opening your workspace. Continued use after agreeing to an updated version constitutes acceptance of that version. Earlier versions remain available in the project’s public source-code history.
16. General
If any provision of these Terms is held unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed, and the remainder stays in effect. A failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms; the project may assign them to a successor maintainer of the software. The Terms, the MIT License, the Disclaimer, and the Privacy notice are the entire agreement regarding the software and supersede any other statements about it.
17. Contact
Questions about these Terms can be raised publicly through the issue tracker of the project’s source-code repository. The project is maintained on a volunteer, as-is basis and no response time is promised.
